This section outlines the responsibilities, expectations, and eligibility requirements associated with each rank and designated training role within the department.
All personnel are expected to uphold professional standards, maintain operational competence, and adhere to the established chain of command at all times.
Rank Definitions & Expectations
Cadet
Cadets are probationary officers undergoing foundational training.
Responsibilities:
Attend and actively participate in all required training sessions.
Learn departmental procedures, radio protocol, and legal frameworks.
Participate in supervised ride-alongs for operational exposure.
Demonstrate consistent development and professionalism.
Eligibility:
May undertake Class 2 and Class 3 firearms training when authorised.
Solo Cadet
A Solo Cadet has demonstrated sufficient competence to patrol independently while continuing structured development.
Responsibilities:
Continue attending mandatory training.
Operate independently within departmental policy.
Seek guidance from supervisors when necessary.
Maintain professional standards at all times.
Officer
Officers are fully qualified and responsible for frontline policing operations.
Core Expectations:
Uphold the duty to protect and serve.
Maintain professional radio etiquette.
Demonstrate full competence in all Cadet-level training.
Maintain proficient knowledge of the Penal Code.
Conduct standard patrol operations using authorised vehicles.
Operational Authority:
May carry Class 2 and Class 3 firearms (on person or secured in vehicle) when operationally required.
Eligible to pursue advanced certifications.
Eligible for selection into specialised units, including:

DetectivesGang UnitUndercover Operations
Corporal I, II & III
Corporal ranks represent experience, operational maturity, and increased responsibility. These positions include a pay band increase and are designed for officers who wish to remain operational rather than pursue senior management roles.
Responsibilities:
Serve as experienced operational officers.
Provide informal guidance to junior officers.
Eligible to become a Field Training Officer (FTO).
Expected to instruct in at least one advanced training area.
Attend and participate in Leadership Meetings when requested by a Sergeant or above.
Sergeant
Sergeants serve as first-line supervisors and operational leaders.
Requirements & Responsibilities:
Must hold at least one active certification.
Lead or instruct within an advanced training area.
Develop and maintain assigned Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Serve as the approval authority for amendments within their remit.
Oversee advanced training standards.
Act as the escalation point for Corporals.
Provide structured mentorship to assigned Cadets.
Attend and actively participate in Leadership Meetings.
Lieutenant
Lieutenants provide strategic oversight and departmental leadership.
Responsibilities:
Specialise in designated operational or training areas.
Maintain ownership of assigned sections of the SOP manual.
Ensure accuracy and upkeep of all related SOPs and training materials.
Serve as the escalation point for Sergeants.
Lead discussions in Leadership Meetings.
Coordinate and advise during major incidents or high-threat situations.
Provide mentoring and guidance across all ranks.
Serve as an instructor or operational lead when required.
Captain
Captains provide executive oversight of departments and specialised units.
Responsibilities:
Serve as a senior escalation point for reporting ranks.
Oversee and direct specialised units.
Attend and participate in Command Meetings.
Provide strategic operational guidance.
Serve as an instructor or operational lead when required.
Assistant Chief
The Assistant Chief supports overall command operations and departmental strategy.
Responsibilities:
Act as a senior escalation point for all ranks.
Lead Command Meetings.
Support departmental planning and operational decision-making.
Serve as an instructor or operational lead when required.
Chief
The Chief holds ultimate command authority within the department.
Responsibilities:
Serve as the final escalation point for all ranks.
Provide overall leadership and strategic direction.
Maintain oversight of departmental standards and operational integrity.
Serve as an instructor or operational lead when required.
Training Roles & Authority
Field Training Officer (FTO)
The Field Training Officer designation is awarded to personnel authorised to deliver structured training.
Responsibilities:
Conduct practical and theory-based assessments of Cadets.
Deliver classroom instruction.
Provide structured ride-along training.
Complete required theory-based assessments.
Support Practical Assessments (PA).
Deliver general and specialist training as qualified.
Instructor
Instructors are authorised to deliver certified training courses.
Eligibility:
Must hold the rank of Corporal or above.
Must possess the relevant certification(s) for the subject being delivered.
Responsibilities:
Deliver classroom and practical training.
Ensure course content aligns with current SOPs.
Maintain professional instructional standards.
Assess and evaluate officers undertaking certification training.
Training Lead
Training Leads oversee the structure, standards, and operational readiness of specific Units or advanced training areas.
Eligibility:
Must hold the rank of Sergeant or above.
Must hold relevant certifications within the area they oversee.
Responsibilities:
Manage day-to-day training operations within their assigned area.
Ensure certification compliance and consistency across the department.
Maintain and update associated SOPs and training materials.
Report directly to the Training & Development Department.
Ensure officers remain certified and operationally ready.
