Weapon Logging

1. Overview

This SOP outlines the procedures for managing, tracking, and documenting both legal and illegal firearms within the MDT and Evidence systems.

Accurate weapon logging is essential for tracking discharges, supporting prosecutions, and maintaining public safety.

2.1 Automatic Registration

All firearms legally purchased from:

  • G6

  • Ammunation

are automatically registered to the buyer’s profile in the MDT Weapons Database.

These weapons will appear under the individual’s profile in the Weapons tab.

If a legally registered firearm is reported stolen:

  1. Create a report for the theft.

  2. Locate the weapon in the Weapons Database.

  3. Apply the tag: "Stolen" to the weapon profile.

  4. Link any supporting evidence to the corresponding report/case.

All evidence relating to the stolen firearm must be placed within the relevant case file.

If an individual:

  • Unlawfully discharges a firearm (not self-defence), or

  • Is carrying a firearm without a valid licence,

they may be:

  • Charged accordingly.

  • Have their firearm licence revoked (subject to context and officer discretion).

Officers must document all relevant circumstances within the report.

3. Illegal Firearms

3.1 Definition

Any firearm that cannot be legally purchased from Ammunation or provided by G6 and registered against the persons profile is classified as an illegal firearm.

These weapons:

  • Will not appear in the MDT Weapons Database.

  • Are considered unlawfully acquired unless proven otherwise.

3.2 Creating a Weapon Profile (Illegal Firearms)

If a firearm involved in an incident is not found in the Weapons Database:

  1. Photograph the discharge scene.

  2. Collect all casing(s) in accordance with the Evidence SOP.

  3. Create a new weapon profile in the Weapons Database.

  4. Complete all available fields using the template below.

  5. Upload and attach scene photographs and evidence images to the main notes section.

Creating a profile allows us to:

  • Track future discharges.

  • Identify patterns of use.

  • Build prosecutable evidence.

4. Storing Evidence & Casings

Casing Storage

  • Store collected casings in the report or case where the weapon was used.

  • If multiple scenes contribute casings to the same stash, add a note to each evidence bag to prevent scene contamination or confusion.

  • Ensure each evidence bag clearly identifies which incident it relates to.

5. Weapon Profile Template (For Manual Creation)

In the MDT select Weapons tab. Click Create, select the model and input the serial number.

6. Compliance & Accountability

Officers are responsible for:

  • Ensuring stolen firearms are correctly tagged.

  • Creating weapon profiles when required.

  • Properly documenting discharge incidents.

  • Correctly storing and labeling evidence.

  • Linking all relevant evidence to the appropriate case/report.

Failure to follow weapons logging procedures may result in disciplinary action.
