Radio Etiquette

General Conduct

  • Transmit key information only.

  • Say it as you see it.

  • Use call signs whenever possible.

  • Use 10-codes instead of plain language unless there is a threat to life.

  • Never argue over the radio. Arrange to meet once the scene is Code 4.

  • Never hesitate to transmit relevant information.

  • Follow the direction of the commanding officer. Ask for guidance if required.

Driving & Pursuit Commentary

  • When providing direction of travel: Direction first (Left/Right), then cardinal direction, then road name. Example: Right, Southbound Meteor Street.

  • Use landmarks whenever possible.

  • If a pursuit continues for a duration, move to the next higher radio channel.

78 Calls (Urgent Assistance)

78 calls must include:

  • Exact location

  • Vehicle description (colour, make, model)

  • Suspect description

  • Any additional relevant information

Direct Calls

To request a direct call:

  • State: 200 to 205 Direct
