Ride Alongs
The purpose of this policy is to help officers understand the rules and regulations when taking a Civilian out on patrol with them.
Taking out a civilian
Civilian ride alongs MUST be formally applied for via the civilian coming to front desk at MRPD Ride alongs MUST be given the go ahead by a member of high command. Officers and above are to take out ride alongs if they wish to do so - If you wish to have the authorization to take out civilians, please speak with a member of command.
Civilian guidelines
All individuals taking part in a ride along MUST:
Not be wearing a mask
Must be carrying ID and shown on application for ridealong
Consent to a search of their person
Surrender their weapons if they have a weapon on their person or take it to their home or personal vehicle
All individuals taking part in a ride along, MUST be wearing closed toed shoes, long pants, shirt and an unmarked black vest.
The LEO taking out the Civilian is to provide the individual with 1 ARMOUR for personal protection
THE LEO MUST ensure that the civilian understands the following rules;
Civilians are NOT to leave the vehicle until cleared to do so. This clearance will generally occur after a situation has been called Code-4 or in some instances at a 10-38. If the officer the civilian is on patrol with gets injured or downed in any way, they are to stay in the vehicle unless there is an immediate threat to person or life in which case they are advised to flee the area. DO NOT attempt to perform officer duties.
PLEASE Encourage the individual to ask questions, they are riding along to understand the daily life of an LEO or understand what the job entails.
Who can have ride alongs
Any member of the mayoral team
Any person who is a mayoral candidate
Any person who wishes to apply to be an LEO
Any civilian with no felony charges
Any civilian going through the expungement process Update your radio unit to RA to indicate you have a ride along in the vehicle.
