Strike Points - Staff

Strike points can be issued by a Sergeant or above and they will expire up to a maximum of 30 days after the last set of strike points are given. Depending on the amount of strike points that have been issued, they will carry a different weighting for the amount of time they are active for, as per the below:

1-10 Strike Points

10 Days

11-20 Strike Points

20 Days

21+ Strike Points

30 Days

30 Strike Points

Suspension

If an officer is on day 9 and receives further strike points, they will then reset to 0 days completed and be required to complete the full time period required for the amount of Strike Points they have accrued.

If an officer accrues more than 30 Strike Points, they will be immediately suspended pending further investigation from Command. This will be for a period of 7 days dependent upon the complexity of the case. A member of Command will reach out to invite the officer back into VPD for a further discussion around this once the investigation has completed.

Officers who have active Strike Points, or who are part of an active investigation, will not be eligible for Promotion until the points have expired.

If an officer's actions are deemed to be directly responsible for the endangerment of their colleagues or other members of the public, they will be either suspended or placed on desk duties, depending on the severity of the case, for a period of at least 72 hours whilst an investigation takes place, this is before any strikepoints have been awarded.

All of the below infractions are applicable to verbal and written conduct including social media. All Officers are to be held accountable for the below infractions whether ON OR OFF DUTY.

Strikepoint System Appeal Process

Officers have the right to appeal their strike points within 5 days of issuance.

  • Appeals must be submitted in writing (printed) and handed directly to a member of Command.

  • Once received, the appeal will be reviewed and discussed internally by Command staff.

  • A final decision will be communicated to the officer within 5 days of the appeal being submitted.

  • A thorough investigation must take place during the 5 days.

  • A minimum of 4 command members must be present to discuss the appeal.

  • If strike points were issued as the result of a complaint from the public or fellow officer, the accused officer must not discuss the complaint with the complaining party or any alleged victim

  • If an officer is found to be interfering with the appeal process their appeal will be rejected.

  • The outcome of the appeal will be relayed as soon as the officer is available.

  • If the appeal is successful the strike points will be removed from the officers profile.

  • If the appeal is unsuccessful the strike points will remain on the Officers profile and be active from the date first implemented.

  • The decision made by command at the appeal hearing will be final. Officers are encouraged to provide clear reasoning and any relevant evidence to support their case.

This SOP provides a clear, organised framework for responding to internal active strike points. By following these procedures, officers can ensure a prompt, coordinated, and effective response to strike points appeal
