PIT, Box & Spike

With approval from Incident Command on scene PIT, Box & Spike (PBS) can be approved. The idea behind these tactics is to bring the chase to a close. This is usual after around 15 minutes of pursuit as per most negotiations. This tactic should only be approved if the vehicle is reckless evading. The Ideal number to perform a PIT is 3 units (Primary, Secondary and Tertiary) this is to easily allow you to transition the PIT into a box. You are authorised to PIT the vehicle providing you have an equal amount of officers attached to the pursuit that are present in the vehicle.

Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT)

  • Can be requested by anyone in the pursuit but must be approved by Incident Command on the Scene or highest ranking officer.

  • Should only be used in areas where it is safe to do so. E.G do not PIT outside pillbox or densely populated areas.

  • PITs must only be executed on vehicles traveling at the approved speeds: City = 80MPH Highway = 110MPH, weather and traffic density should also be considered.

  • PITs are utilised to put the vehicle in a position to attempt a box.

Box

Boxing in a vehicle is most commonly done following a pit, as this is usually the time the suspect vehicle is stationary and close to a solid object. When attempting a box you are expected to be acting in a professional manner, and the following should followed for a successful vehicle box.

  • When Box is being attempted Communication with additional units is Key for positioning each car

  • Closing the gap to the suspect vehicle at a safe speed

  • DO NOT ram the vehicle, you are attempting to bring the stop to a safe end

  • Be aware of your surroundings when exiting your own vehicle

  • If the suspect refuses to get out of the vehicle, you are covered to taser them from the car

Spike Strips

  • Can be requested by anyone in the pursuit but must be approved by the Primary on the Scene or highest ranking officer.

  • Deploying unit must have a vehicle with them in code 2

  • Officers must make it clear on radio that the spikes have been placed and request the speed. “What speed is the current active traveling? 206 placing spike strips northbound at the Alta street carpark, please pass on the left to avoid the spikes”.

  • Spike should be prioritised for use in areas where the suspect car has little option but to go over the spike e.g. in alley ways or tight streets.

  • Spikes should be used at under 80mph in the City and 110 mph on freeways
